On December 8th, the always mind-bogglingly fab Passion For Fashion vintage auction will take place in London, curated by Kerry Taylor auctioneers. This particular event is quite special in that it features many designer items from the personal wardrobe of Audrey Hepburn. In addition to her legendarily elegant frocks, there were some doozies from the British Boutique era that had me frantically writing letters to Santa, telling him what a good girl i've been. Here are a few . . .
(Above): I rarely meet a kaftan I don't like, but this 1970s patchworked chiffon & brocade Thea Porter was enough to make my heart fall out. Not sure yet who the lucky bidder was, but i'm pretty sure it has to be the high priestess of cosmic-tribal-galactic-hippie-glamour. Either that, or Kate Moss.
If you don't find the back of this c.1900 grey silk tapelace jacket to be the most romantic thing on this whole uncivilized planet, then you haven't seen nearly enough Merchant Ivory films.
(L) A Russian inspired Yves Saint Laurent couture coat c.1976-77 (R) no doubt inspired at least slightly by Julie Christie's wardrobe in the beautiful 1965 film Doctor Zhivago.
(L) c.1920s Liberty & Co. velvet cape with brocaded Art Deco foliate panels (R) Dreamy c.1970s gown by Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell.
Audrey Hepburn's tweed herring-bone coat c.1956, which she is shown wearing while walking her dog 'Famous', who was a gift from her then-husband Mel Ferrer while she was filming Love in the Afternoon.
(L) A c.1980s ensemble featuring roses and Hebrew script by Susan Clowes for The Foundry (R) Boy George wearing another of her awesome designs in Culture Club's 1983 video for Do you Really Want to Hurt Me?
This c.1970s ethnic op-art kaftan by John Bates (with an embroidered suede bodice) is simply the stuff my wardrobe dreams are made of.
And though the above are from an already closed November 4th vintage auction, I want say for the record, that life will prove to be completely unjust if I never get to put this velvet monarch butterfly-print Thea Porter frock on my body (c.1971). And ditto for the Galanos sparkle gown on the right.
Fab finds! But for picture L, I believe that's Hebrew, not Arabic.
